Our Mission and Logo of the Santa Fe Trail Scenic
and Historic Byway Mountain Branch

Our clever Mountain Branch logo was created by artist and writer Doug Holdread. We thank him whole heartedly for branding the Mountain Branch! The logo represents the actual route of the Santa Fe Trail. The dotted outlines indicate our neighboring Santa Fe Trail states. The Trinidad Colorado Welcome Center proudly adorns a bronze plaque of the Mountain Branch Logo at it's entrance.

Designated as Colorado State Scenic Byway by Governor Roy Romer and Colorado Department of Transportation as Scenic & Historic Byways Community in 1992, and designated as National Scenic Byway by FHWA National Scenic Byways Program (June 9, 1998)

The colored version of our logo contains a silhouette of Fishers Peak under the Mountain Branch.

Our Mission

To preserve historic sites and resources for future generations.

We seek to achieve a balance between preservation and development. We strive to increase public knowledge about the locations of archaeological and historic resources along the route. We encourage protection of sites on private land through voluntary mechanisms, incentives and certification programs.

To increase recognition and appreciation of the multi-cultural heritage in communities within the corridor.

We increase information availability about travel in both directions along the Trail's historic routes and the ties it created among the vastly different cultures and races. We strive to preserve the pioneer spirit among the region's population. We also enhance awareness of the Trail's history among persons moving into the region. We promote Trail-related activities among all ages and families and we use connections provided by the Trail to improve inter-community relations.

To upgrade and improve maintenance of developed sites and facilities.

We develop additional sites which are not now accessible or do not have visitor services. Our objectives are to improve the quality of visits and to increase the number of sites visited.

To increase visitation and tourism's contribution to the economy.

We consistently use a unified Trail-related theme and identity. We seek to increase visitation approximately 5% per year. We also seek to increase the length of visitor stays and expenditures. It is our goal to increase visitation to under-utilized sites and facilities as well as provide services and facilities to attract groups. Last but not least, we disperse Trail-related activities throughout the corridor of the Santa Fe Trail Mountain Branch.

We do whatever it takes to make a trip along the Mountain Branch essential for a visit to the Southwest.
